Dortmund held to draw as dramatic Undav hat-trick seals a point for Stuttgart

Borussia Dortmund returned to the Westfalenstadion after the international break to take on VfB Stuttgart. The visitors had won the last six meetings in all competitions between the two teams - tonight Hoeneß' side came from behind three times as Deniz Undav netted a hattrick in a 3-3 draw.

With a silent protest in place from both fans against government proposals regarding stadium safety, the opening 12 minutes seemed almost alien. Stuttgart took the game to their hosts with barely a murmur from the stands despite the early onslaught.

Fittingly, BVB arose from their slumber when their supporters started to sing - Serhou Guirassy heading over from a Maxi Beier cross. Stuttgart had a fine chance on the break nearing 20 minutes when Tiago Tomás failed to steer home Leweling's cutback.

Beier and Jobe Bellingham tried their luck around the half-hour mark albeit both efforts lacked accuracy. BVB eventually made the breakthrough when Deniz Undav collided with Nico Schlotterbeck in the box. Emre Can stepped up to brush home the penalty for 1-0.

Aside from a rare flurry down the left from Leweling who was embroiled in a fascinating duel with Ryerson, Dortmund extended their advantage on 41 minutes. Guirassy was spectacularly denied by fingertips of Nübel but Beier followed in to drill in the rebound.

Stuttgart required two second-half minutes to cut the gap to 2-1 through Deniz Undav. Niko Kovač won't be best pleased with the ease with which VfB cut through midfield as El Khannouss fed the striker who finished emphatically with a flick of his boot.

BVB thought they restored their two-goal lead when Guirassy found the net but a VAR review spotted the Guinean offside. While both teams strung together some nice passages of play, chances were seldom other than a nifty Leweling shot that was smothered by Kobel.

Parity was restored by Sebastian Hoeneß' men with 20 minutes remaining. Angelo Stiller's corner found Mittelstädt who picked out Undav in an unmarked position for a tap-in. Substitutes eventually arrived as Svensson and Adeyemi made cameos.

Drama ensued towards the death as BVB regained the lead for seconds - Karim Adeyemi rounded off a wonderful count attack only for Dortmund to effectively concede from the restart. Chris Führich fed Undav who swiveled to perfection and slipped a low shot inside the post through Schlotterbeck's legs.
