Maximilian Beier will play as a right-back in Borussia Dortmund’s pre-season game against FC Tokyo on Saturday. Niko Kovac confirmed the news that he’ll be tested in the new position for the first time.

“We’re going to let him play as a right-back. That's the position we've set for him tomorrow," said Kovac ahead of the game in Tokyo. The new development could see Yan Couto leave the club without the need to sign a like-for-like replacement.

“I’m lucky to be able to play in several positions. I also like to play as left-back or right-back. But, I’ve always played in attack since I can remember. I feel most comfortable there.” Beier said about his preference.

According to a report by Ruhr Nachrichten, Kovac has decided that the 23-year-old should permanently play as a right-back. The performance of the Germany international in tomorrow’s friendly will give the first insights about that possibility.

Meanwhile, Beier could find it difficult to play regularly in the front three next season with Borussia Dortmund ready to sign two attackers. There were reports linking right-back Elias Baum to Dortmund earlier this week, but the negotiations with Eintracht Frankfurt will be difficult for the Black and Yellows.
