Borussia Dortmund will try Maximilian Beier at right-back in Saturday’s pre-season friendly against FC Tokyo in Tokyo. It will be his first outing in the role. The move could offer an in-house solution if Yan Couto does leave, avoiding a like-for-like signing.

Ruhr Nachrichten reports that Niko Kovac has decided the 23-year-old should be used permanently at right-back, with Saturday’s display to provide the first indication of that switch.

Beier has largely operated in attack and regards himself as versatile, though he feels most comfortable up front.

Minutes in the front three could be limited next season, with Dortmund ready to sign two attackers.

Dortmund have been linked with right-back Elias Baum this week, though negotiations with Eintracht Frankfurt will be difficult.
