Manchester United are unlikely to move for Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo in January, despite recent reports.
United have been linked with a move to sign the Premier League duo in the new year, as Ruben Amorim plans the next stage of his rebuild at Old Trafford.
Guehi will enter the final six months of his contract at Crystal Palace in January and could be signed for a cut-price fee. The England international could also move as a free agent in the summer.
Semenyo’s sparkling performances for Bournemouth have attracted interest from suitors. United were among the teams to enquire about the 25-year-old in the summer, before Semenyo signed a new deal with the Cherries. However, that deal contains a release clause of £65m that can be activated in the winter window.
Despite admiration for both players, BBC journalist Simon Stone has cast doubt on Manchester United signing either star.
He believes Liverpool – who saw a deadline day move for the player collapse in the summer – remain frontrunners to sign Guehi, if he remains in English football. Semenyo, meanwhile, has been deemed too expensive given United’s summer spend and options in attacking areas.
“The Guehi one feels like a good idea, but he was so close to signing for Liverpool in the summer that if he stays in the Premier League, Anfield is where I expect him to go,” he said.
“As for Semenyo, having spent £200M on Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha – and with Mason Mount, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes also capable of playing in the number 10 roles, I just cannot see that happening. The priority will be in other areas, I think.”
