Athletic Club have bid farewell to two legends of Los Leones at the end of the season in Raul Garcia and Iker Muniain. The former has retired, but Muniain, at just 31 years of age, is still looking for a new club.
Tipped to look outside of Europe, Muniain is a self-professed fan of Argentine giants River Plate, and there have been links between the two. It looks difficult for Muniain’s dream move to EL Monumental to come off though. Diario AS note that River already have five of their six non-Argentine squad spots full, and it appears their top priority this summer is a forward. River are already in negotiations with Enner Valencia of Internacional, and the Ecuadorian would complete the permitted number of foreign players in the River squad.
It’s not yet clear where Muniain will head after two decades at the club, but Major League Soccer has been mentioned a number of times, albeit perhaps simply because it appears the most popular destination with ageing Spanish stars.
