Durham Women have warned they will cease operations at all levels within three weeks unless fresh investment or a buyer emerges.
The club said in a statement that they are seeking investment or a complete sale, after months of talks with potential backers fell away in recent weeks. Without new funds, the club cannot meet full compliance requirements in WSL 2 for 2026/27.
Staff and players have been told of the deadline. Durham finished 10th of 12 last season in the second tier, where they share a division with Sunderland Women and Newcastle United.
Founded in 2007 as a single under-10 girls team, the club expanded rapidly. The club has progressed without the backing of a men’s professional side, but its current majority shareholders can no longer keep pace with the game’s growth. They want to hand over to a party able to build on the legacy and realise future opportunities.
Nicknamed the Wildcats, Durham have twice reached the Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals and the League Cup last eight. Neil Redfearn oversaw their final six matches of last season.
