In the end, a win is a win is a win. But for many nations, HOW you achieve the victory is as important as the result.
The Netherlands, always pragmatists, tend to eschew such histrionics, but even the most die-hard Oranje supporter had to breathe a sign of relief to walk away from Kaunas, Lithuania with three points.
At first it looked like the Dutch would cruise, with Memphis Depay and Quinten Timber scoring in the 11th and 33rd minutes respectively. But Lithuania struck back with a pair of unanswered goals before halftime to put the visitors behind the eight ball. But Memphis would not be denied, and in the 63rd minute headed in the game winner from Denzel Dumfries’ cross. That goal also made Memphis the top goal scorer in Dutch history, eclipsing Robin van Persie’s 51 tally by one. The win puts the Dutch on 10 points in Group G with one game in hand.
Germany is one of those nations that can find fault with a victory if it isn’t achieved in the expected manner. There was all sorts of shade thrown on Die Mannschaft after this match, with some pundits lambasting the “slow” and “predictable” nature of the victory. But there was nothing predictable about Florian Wirtz’s brilliant free kick, which was the last nail to seal Northern Ireland’s fate. And let’s be honest, they were better today than in the loss to Slovakia on Thursday.
Poland, filled with confidence after Friday’s 1 – 1 draw with the Netherlands, put the beat down on Finland before a home crowd.
Matty Cash, whose goal earned Poland a point on Thursday, opened the scoring. Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Kaminski made it three. Benjamin Kallman got a late goal for Finland. Poland are level with Holland on 10 points.
All the remaining matches ended with one side recording a goose egg.
