Bar Ajax and Utrecht, this week was a great week for the Eredivisie in Europe. Read on for our review of the results for the Dutch sides that took part in European football this week.
PSV got their Champions League campaign going with a huge win over Serie A side Napoli at home. After losing their opening game of the competition to Union St Gilloise at home, they have now picked up four points to really get their Champions League challenge going. An own goal from Buongiorno followed up by a goal from Ismael Saibari gave them a 2-1 lead at half-time. Dennis Man made it three just after the break, with Lorenzo Lucca handing PSV a helping hand with a straight red card in the 76th minute. Man grabbed his second before Ricardo Pepi and Couhaib Driouech added some icing to the cake. An impressive 6-2 victory for PSV.
Ajax were on the other side of a thumping. They went down 5-1 to Chelsea and like Napoli shot themselves in the foot with an early red card for Kenneth Taylor. Wout Weghorst had given them a chance with a goal from the penalty spot, but in the end the numerical advantage of the Premier League side was too much for Ajax as they lost 5-1 and now sit bottom of the Champions League.
Go Ahead Eagles made it two wins in a row in the Europa League with a famous win over Premier League side Aston Villa. It was the midlands side that took an early lead in Deventer through Evann Guessand, only for Mathis Suray to equalise just before half-time for the Eredivisie side. Just after the hour mark the Go Ahead Eagles comeback was complete as Mats Deijl made it 2-1. Unai Emery rang the changes but his side was unable to find a second goal. The Eagles now sit 12th with six points from their three games so far.
Feyenoord grabbed their first win in the Europa League with a 3-1 home victory over Greek side Panithanikos. Like the rest of the Eredivisie sides, they fell behind first but were able to rally back. Givario Read struck just before half-tie to cancel out Karol Swiderski’s opener. Anis Hadj Moussa made it 2-1 10 minutes into the second half before Cyle Larin came off the bench to make it 3-1 in the 90th minute. Hopefully this will kick-start Feyenoord’s European campaign.
Sadly, Utrecht could not make it three from three. They were beaten 2-0 away from home against a Freiburg side that are on a decent run of form at the moment. The Bundesliga club took the lead through Yuito Suzuki in the 20th minute before the ever reliable Vincenzo Grifo made it two on the stroke of half-time. Utrecht did manage to get 11 shots off, but none found the net and they suffered a third Europa Legaue defeat. They are the only side yet to score but, due to Rangers shipping more goals, are not bottom of the league table just yet.
Europa Conference League: AZ off the mark
Just one goal was enough for AZ Alkmaar to get their first win in the Conference League over Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava. Sven Mijnans had an eventual few minutes. The midfielder gave the side the lead in the 44th minute and had a chance to make it two just a while later when AZ were awarded a penalty. Unfortunately for Mijnans he was unable to beat Dominik Takac in the Slovan goal, but thankfully for AZ man the side held on to win 1-0 in blustery conditions.
With every side but Ajax and Utrecht winning, it was a strong week for the Eredivisie in Europe and a good amount of coefficient points were gained as a result.
