While it may not seem overly impressive on paper, last season was a big moment for Dynamo Dresden. After earning promotion from the 3. Liga, Dynamo managed to finish eleventh in the 2. Bundesliga, avoiding relegation by four points. It was the club's best finish in nearly a decade.

It wasn't all smooth sailing. Thomas Stamm's side headed into the Rückrunde, the second half of the season, with the worst record in the league. Dynamo won just one of their opening thirteen games in all competitions. Safety in their first season back in the second division was far from a guarantee.

However, Dynamo turned on the style after January, even recording their biggest second-division win ever with a 6-0 victory over Preußen Münster. A 2-1 win over Holstein Kiel on the final day capped off the turnaround, confirming Dynamo's spot in the 2. Bundesliga for at least another season.

It's been a busy summer, but there is certainly reason for the club's fans to be optimistic heading into this season, especially considering their form down the stretch.

Transfers

The big absence this summer is Kofi Amoako. The 21-year-old midfielder was one of the revelations of the 2. Bundesliga, becoming a key player in his first season with Dynamo. This summer, HSV swooped in, paying his release clause, reported to be €2 million, per BILD.

Amoako was not the lone sale, but he is the most notable to date. Striker Robin Meißner and winger Dominik Kother made their loans permanent after successful spells with Osnabrück and Duisburg, respectively.

Captain and local Stefan Kutschke has retired, but remains involved with the club off the field. Claudio Kammerknecht and Vinko Šapina moved to SV Waldhof Mannheim and FC Ingolstadt, respectively. Both were depth pieces, as was Sascha Risch, who headed to Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Several loanees were retained. Midfielder Robert Wagner, 23, signed from SC Freiburg. Winger Ben Bobzien, 23, joined from Mainz 05. Right-back Jonas Sterner, 24, joined from Hannover 96. Thomas Keller, 27, who can play in midfield and defense, joined from Heidenheim.

All four of those players were signed on loan in January, before making permanent moves. All should once again play crucial roles this season.

Versatile forward Kaan İnanoğlu, 20, also joined in the summer on a free transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt II and has shown real promise in preseason.

Ahmet Muhamedbegović, Nicolai Rapp, Kenneth Schmidt, Tobias Raschl, Brooklyn Ezeh, and Simon Straudi round off the signings, adding needed depth and, in some cases, starter quality to the squad.

Pre-season

Dynamo Dresden have played seven friendlies, winning six. Pre-season started with two 14-0 wins over lower league sides FSV Budissa Bautzen and LSV Neustadt/Spree. Wins over KSV Hessen Kassel and Grazer AK, 4-0 and 5-0 respectively, followed.

Dynamo closed out their summer with two friendlies against 2. Bundesliga side Energie Cottbus, winning one and losing one, before ending on a high with a 2-1 victory over Union Berlin.

Predicted lineup

Dynamo benefit from having some extremely versatile players, meaning they can line up in a number of ways. There are also several young players, like İnanoğlu, who are already pushing for a spot in the eleven.

In general, manager Thomas Stamm has been very willing to give younger players minutes. Center-back Friedrich Müller, who started regularly in the final stages of last season, should be trusted as a full-time starter now.

Predictions

Unlike last season's team, this Dynamo side should not have to worry about their safety. With so much momentum from the end of last season and a strong pre-season, combined with some astute signings, Dynamo have improved leaps and bounds from the team that started last season.

The 2. Bundesliga is far from easy to predict, but this Dynamo side should be pushing for a top-half finish, and even higher. Stamm will need to get the best out of some key players, but there's certainly the potential for next season in Dresden to be a special one.
