Daniel Bennie has the potential to follow in Ebere Eze's footsteps at QPR

QPR’s sale of Eberechi Eze to Crystal Palace in the 2020 summer transfer window remains their record sale all these years later.

The London outfit earned a fee of around £16 million from the sale of Eze almost six years ago, with the forward going on to become an FA Cup winner and top Premier League star since then.

Palace went on to sell Eze in the 2025 summer transfer window to Arsenal in a deal worth £60 million, showing how far he came since departing Loftus Road. In his debut campaign in North London, he has tormented Spurs, scoring five times across two fixtures, saving his best for the Gunners' big rivalry game.

The sell-on clause from his move to the Emirates net the Hoops another large sum, with the club receiving 15 percent of the £60 million deal, which amounted to £9 million.

That brought the total earned from Eze's sale to £25 million, which is a significant amount of money for a team of QPR's resources to receive, and the deal, including a sell-on clause, is a testament to those who negotiated his initial exit in 2020.

QPR could have the next Ebere Eze on their hands with Daniel Bennie

Daniel Bennie has yet to really light up the Championship since he arrived from Perth Glory in the 2024 summer transfer window.

However, patience is needed for the teenager, who is still young and has already played more regularly for the second division side than might have been expected when he first arrived at the club.

The winger is still only 19, and has earned some experience of the Championship with 18 appearances to his name across the last 18 months.

The teenager was likely seen as one for the future, and it wouldn’t have been too surprising if he had stayed in the U21 side all this time, but he’s earned plenty of experience for someone of his age.

By the time Eze was 19, he had only played regularly at League Two level from his loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers, so it is possible that the Australian could yet reach the same level as the Arsenal star in the future.

The forward played 20 times, and contributed five goals, in the fourth tier during the first half of the 2017/18 campaign, before returning to QPR to play 16 league games in the remainder of the term.

Bennie has already surpassed that number of appearances, although he is still awaiting his first goal for the club - compared to Eze bagging two after returning for the second half of 2017/18.

Daniel Bennie can grow into a top level talent

Bennie has played six times in the league this season for Julien Stéphan’s side, including starts against Oxford United and Blackburn Rovers, along with appearances against Plymouth Argyle and West Ham in the two cup competitions.

The winger is still learning a lot about the senior game in England, and has had to adapt from life in Australia, so it’s not too surprising that it’s taking him a longer time to make an impact compared to Eze.

However, it is promising for QPR that Stéphan has felt that Bennie deserves a chance in the team already without the need for a loan spell away from Loftus Road.

While a loan to get regular game time may have been beneficial, playing at a Championship level is still valuable experience at this stage of his career, as he will be learning a lot with every minute he spends on the pitch.

The season that Eze’s age was 20 saw him grow a lot as a player, before striking 14 goals and notching eight assists in over 4,000 minutes of Championship football. At 21 he became a star worth £16 million in the transfer market.

If Bennie can show some further signs of improvement in the final months of the season, and potentially even help QPR establish themselves in the top half of the Championship table, then he might be set for a similar trajectory in 2026/27 that we saw Eze on in 2019/20.
