Newcastle United are awaiting further assessment on Bruno Guimaraes (28) after Eddie Howe admitted the midfielder’s latest injury setback is a “worry” for the club, Sky Sports has reported.
Guimaraes was forced off during Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven after landing awkwardly on his right ankle while contesting a header. The Brazil international attempted to continue but was eventually replaced by Lewis Miley as the swelling increased.
Speaking after the match, Howe said initial signs point to an ankle issue but stressed the full extent of the injury is not yet clear. The head coach acknowledged particular concern given Guimaraes’ reluctance to leave the pitch, describing him as a player who “never wants to come off”.
The timing of the injury is far from ideal for Newcastle, who are already dealing with an extensive injury list. Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy, Emil Krafth and Jamal Lascelles remain sidelined, while William Osula and Dan Burn have only recently returned to training and were not ready to face PSV.
Guimaraes has been central to Newcastle’s recent momentum, offering control and leadership in midfield during a demanding run of fixtures across competitions. His availability will be closely monitored ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Aston Villa, with the club hopeful the problem proves minor.
Howe reiterated that every effort will be made to accelerate Guimaraes’ recovery, but the coming days will be crucial in determining how long Newcastle may be without one of their most influential players.
