After taking the decision to sack Liam Rosenior earlier in the week, the Chelsea hierarchy are once again on the lookout for a new head coach and are expected to wait until after the season finishes to make an appointment.

Calum McFarlane has taken up the post of interim head coach for the rest of the season and his second reign in this role began with a 1-0 win over Leeds in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday afternoon.

Merson, however, believes Chelsea should be queuing up outside of Howe’s door should he decide to leave Newcastle at the end of the season.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: "I'm a big fan of Eddie Howe and if he leaves, they will be queuing up around the corner. Be careful Newcastle.

"Chelsea would take him all day long. We were talking about him being the next England manager. Everyone will be queuing up to take him.

"It should be his decision if he wants to leave. He won a trophy for the club for the first time in 70 years."

While Howe is clearly Merson’s top choice to become the next Chelsea head coach, it’s not a sentiment shared by many supporters as footage has emerged online of some chanting for Cesc Fabregas.

Though, the former Blues midfielder has already distanced himself from a return to west London, insisting he plans to stay on as Como manager.

“I don't have to say anything,” he told the press. “I don't know anything about it. It would be stupid to think about things that aren't important now, because this isn't important to me.

“The most important thing is Genoa, the next match, and we want to do everything we can to win.

“I think I'll continue as Como's coach: my experience as a player gives me peace of mind.”
