Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento are making significant strides in their recovery process.
The news will come as a massive boost to the Magpies as they prepare for a difficult run of fixtures that starts with Sunday’s clash with Manchester City.
Howe has delivered timely updates on several Newcastle players, including Gordon and Livramento, whose absences have been felt over the past few weeks.
Newcastle went into the international break after suffering back-to-back defeats against West Ham United and Brentford.
With the two-week hiatus now in the rear-view mirror, Howe is hoping his side can turn things around, and the imminent return of Gordon and Livramento comes as an additional boost.
While Sunday’s clash with City will come too soon for them, Howe has confirmed that both players are edging closer to full fitness.
Gordon missed the 3-1 defeat against Brentford after picking up a hip injury in the 2-0 Champions League victory against Athletic Club earlier this month.
However, his compatriot has been out for much longer. Livramento hasn’t featured for the Magpies since the 2-1 defeat against Arsenal late in September.
He has missed the last nine games across all competitions. Newcastle picked up six wins in that stretch (L3), although just two came in five Premier League games (L3).
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Howe said Gordon is ‘very close’ and has ‘worked well during the break’, although a late decision will determine whether he plays a part against City.
On Livramento, Howe said: “He’s very close. He’s trained in the international break, which is great to see.
“He’s such an important player for us, and it’s great to have him back training with the group.
“He’s been very, very good professionally with how he’s dealt with the injury and the work he’s done with the physios, so I’d say he’s in good shape.”
