Newcastle United were linked with a move for winger Rayan this week, with the Magpies seeking attacking reinforcement in the winter window.

Howe says there are ‘no truths’ in reports linking the Brazilian who bagged 20 goals in 57 appearances last term to a move to St James’ Park.

Rayan has started the current campaign on fire, netting twice in his first game, putting European clubs on alert.

Newcastle could use attacking reinforcement, with Anthony Gordon struggling to find his scoring boots in the Premier League.

Summer signing Anthony Elanga has also failed to make any impact this season. He is yet to open his account for the Geordies.

Consequently, rumours started flying that Newcastle are after Rayan to bolster the forward line, and while he would be a top addition, it appears he is not an option.

Bournemouth are reportedly pushing hard to sign him, and he will likely end up there when he eventually leaves for Europe.

That leaves Howe with little choice but to squeeze more out of the options already at his disposal for the remainder of the campaign.

Newcastle’s wide men have underperformed overall, yet there is still quality there if they can rediscover their confidence and rhythm.

Howe will hope Gordon and Elanga can respond to the challenge, even if neither has truly clicked in black and white so far.

Longer term, the expectation remains that Newcastle will make a significant splash for a marquee winger once the season concludes and the market opens up again.

For now, survival and momentum depend on internal solutions. Harvey Barnes’ recent heroics offer a timely reminder of what is possible from the flanks.

If he can maintain that level, his goals and directness may carry the Magpies over the line before they make bigger moves.
