Eddie Howe is set to leave Newcastle after almost five years in charge, with Al Ahli head coach Matthias Jaissle lined up as his successor, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein.

The report says Howe has decided to step down after informing the club he wants to take a break from football. His departure is expected to be confirmed in the coming days, with Newcastle already in advanced talks with Jaissle.

The 48-year-old transformed Newcastle following his appointment in 2021, steering the club away from relegation before leading them into the Champions League and ending their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by winning the 2025 Carabao Cup.

However, last season proved far more difficult as Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League and exited the Champions League in the last 16, prompting questions over Howe's future despite remaining in charge after end-of-season talks.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle are now ready to turn to Jaissle, who has enjoyed major success with Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, winning back-to-back AFC Champions League titles. The 38-year-old also claimed consecutive Austrian Bundesliga crowns during his spell with Red Bull Salzburg and is expected to become the next man in the St James' Park dugout.
