Eddie Howe is celebrating after leading Newcastle United into the Champions League’s Round of 16.
Newcastle thrashed Qarabag 9-3 on aggregate over two legs to seal their place in the last 16. The Magpies are into the Champions League’s knockout stages for the first time, while their latest win has seen Howe set a new milestone.
Howe has become the first-ever English manager to win six games in a single Champions League season, moving ahead of the previous five-game record held jointly by Bobby Robson in 2002-03 (with Newcastle) and Graham Potter in 2022-23 (with Chelsea).
Newcastle will face either Chelsea or Barcelona in the next round, with the draw for the last 16 set to take place on Friday.
No English manager has ever won the trophy in the Champions League era, while it has been 42 years since an Englishman last led a side to Europe’s top competition, when Joe Fagan managed Liverpool to European Cup success in 1984.
Howe was delighted to seal progress against Qarabag on Tuesday, but said his side dropped off in their second-leg win given a comfortable advantage from the first meeting.
“I thought at 2-0 we probably came off the pedal. We didn’t intend to do that but it was sort of the natural reaction.
“In the second half the game became end-to-end which, for us, was a real shame. For one, we extended too much energy and it meant we didn’t put pressure on their goal, so we’re disappointed with that 45 minutes.
“Amazing (support with Wor Flags display). Big thank you to everyone that thought of that idea. It’s much appreciated the love that the supporters give me and the team. It means everything.”
