Eddie Howe has insisted he would step down at Newcastle United if he felt he was no longer the right man for the job.

Newcastle have endured a challenging campaign in thePremier League and currently sit 12th in the table. After securing Champions League qualification last season, the Magpies are 10 points adrift of those positions this time around.

Newcastle have now lost three consecutivePremier League games, following a 3-2 defeat to Brentford at St James' Park at the weekend.

Howe's position has been questioned in recent weeks, but 48-year-old is adamant that he remains the right man to lead the Magpies.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's clash with Spurs in thePremier League, Howe said he would never put his personal pride over the progress of the club.

Asked at his pre-match press conference if he had any doubts over his ability to turn results around, Howe said: "No, there’s no doubt in my mind and that's why I’m sitting here. If there was then I wouldn’t be because the club is the most important thing. I'd never put myself before the club.

"If I didn't think I was the correct man to take the team forward and I could give the players what they need, then I would step aside and let someone else do it."

He did, however, concede the club's current run was one of the toughest of his time on Tyneside.

"Yeah, I think so. I think any time when you're not getting the results you want. I don’t think performances have been particularly bad. Statistically, we are still pretty strong in every game, but the results certainty haven't matched that.

"It’s been a difficult run of games. It continues to be a difficult run of games for us. That’s where we all need to show our strength of character, our resolve, our resilience and our feeling of how important this is to us and that needs to show most importantly on the pitch."
