Eddie Howe has pledged that Newcastle United will do everything possible to “protect” teenage midfielder Lewis Miley after the 19-year-old became the subject of criticism on social media following Sunday’s goalless draw with Bournemouth.

Miley, who marked his 50th first-team appearance in the match, limited replies on a post made on X to avoid unnecessary hostility. According to BBC Sport, the decision was taken as a precaution, reflecting the midfielder’s age and the pressures of elite football.

The criticism, Howe insisted, was “totally unjustified.” Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s preparations for the weekend, the Magpies boss described Miley as “an outstanding player” whose maturity belies his years. “Sometimes you forget how young he is,” Howe explained. “He needs our support, guidance, and protection. We will treat him as the talent we know he is.”

At 17, he became the youngest player in Champions League history to provide an assist for an English side, and he continues to represent the academy’s success story. His landmark appearance against Bournemouth was met with pride from the midfielder himself, who praised Newcastle’s “amazing” away support.

The teenager has since received an outpouring of backing, with captain Bruno Guimaraes calling him a “top player and guy,” while Joelinton said genuine supporters recognise Miley as a “really good young player.”Howe, meanwhile, acknowledged the corrosive effect of online abuse and urged players to lean on trusted support networks. “It’s about family, friends, agents, and the coaching staff,” he said. “Those are the pillars that help you produce your best football. Any other opinions can be harmful.
