Jamaal Lascelles has signed a short-term deal with Leicester City to the end of the season and could feature against Birmingham City on Saturday, with his leadership seen as something that could lift their campaign.

LeicesterMercury.co.uk reports that the 32-year-old has ended more than a decade at Newcastle and will wear the no.24 shirt previously used by Boubakary Soumare.

Named Newcastle captain in 2016 at 22 and only in his second season there, Lascelles stayed in the leadership group as the club steadied in the Premier League before their recent rise.

Eddie Howe paid tribute, describing him as a strong, vocal presence who fronted up in relegation fights, waited for chances under the current regime, then produced outstanding displays, notably the PSG home game, during their Champions League campaign. He thanked Lascelles for his service to the team and staff.

Lascelles said he intends to set non-negotiable standards and professionalism, focus on marginal gains each day, and use his Championship experience to guide a young squad.

He feels the team has significant talent and that some younger players may benefit from guidance, believing leadership behind the scenes can translate onto the pitch as City aim to climb the table.

Leicester also need defensive solidity, having gone 24 league matches without a clean sheet. With Jannik Vestergaard injured and Caleb Okoli suspended, an immediate debut would help, but Lascelles has not played since September, so that could be a big ask.

He has pledged total commitment, describes himself as athletic and commanding in the box, relishes duels, prides himself on clean sheets, and aims to lift team-mates by sharing the load.
