Manchester City’s mainstay first-choice goalkeeper Ederson has committed his future to the Etihad Stadium by describing transfer rumours as ’99 per cent fake news’.
The Brazil international has long been linked with an exit from Pep Guardiola’s side after it emerged last summer that the shot-stopper was a primary target for numerous ambitious clubs in Saudi Arabia.
From the perspective of the Manchester City goalkeeper last summer, it is understood that Ederson was open to the idea of a new challenge in his career, but at no stage did he ever push for a move away from the club.
As such, club officials within the Etihad Stadium insisted that he could move on should a potential suitor meet their asking price of £50 million, with that possibility not coming to the fore and Ederson remaining for the duration of the most-recent campaign.
But with another transfer window upon us, and conversation around the same possibility emerging with Saudi Pro League clubs lurking, there has been uncertainty over whether Ederson would be Manchester City’s first-choice goalkeeper come the start of the new season.
Now, with the FIFA Club World Cup well underway and Ederson at the forefront of Pep Guardiola’s goalkeeping plans, the 31-year-old has issued a very clear message over his future at the club in a new conversation with reporters.
Speaking from the tournament this week, Ederson has said on his Manchester City future, “My future is here. Some friends send me a lot of news but 99 per cent is fake news.
“I understand but there’s a lot of fake news around my name,” he added. “My head is staying at the club. It stays with the [Manchester] City.
“It gives me everything to go back to the Premier League again and try to win the Champions League as well.”
Manchester City have simultaneously been linked with several goalkeeping options from throughout the European market this season, largely in direct relation to the possibility of Ederson leaving the club.
However, with the plan seemingly not to make any changes in the senior goalkeeping rank this summer, those options are now likely to be placed on hold, with some reports even suggesting that potential successors to Ederson would be willing to wait until next summer.
Among the names linked with moves to Manchester City have been FC Porto’s Diogo Costa and Lille’s Lucas Chevalier, with the former deemed as the most likely to come into the club amid his personal ambitions of moving to the Premier League.
For now, it also remains to be seen what the future holds for current back-up goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno, with the Germany international holding long-standing ambitions of being a first-choice at one of Europe’s top clubs.
