Éderson has been called into Brazil’s World Cup squad by coach Carlo Ancelotti after right-back Wesley, formerly of Flamengo and now at Roma, was ruled out with a left thigh injury.
Wesley suffered the problem in the first half against Egypt last Saturday (06), left the field in pain and was visibly upset on the bench. Subsequent tests indicated a grade 3 diagnosis and a recovery period beyond the tournament, making his omission inevitable.
The Atalanta midfielder addressed Wesley in a social media post, saying God’s plans are greater than his, offering support to the defender and urging everyone to pull together for Brazil.
The 26-year-old built his career in Brazil with Cruzeiro, Corinthians and Fortaleza before moving to Italy. He is due to link up with the squad on Monday (08).
Ancelotti has also shifted the balance of his group by selecting a midfielder for a full-back slot. That increases Flamengo defender Danilo’s chances of playing at the World Cup, given his ability to operate at right-back and centre-back.
