Premiership giants Celtic will be looking to make progress in this season’s edition of the UEFA Champions League when they welcome Icelandic outfit KR Reykjavik to Parkhead this Tuesday. The Celts would be hoping to get back to winning ways in this tie, as their last two Premiership outings were postponed after the irresponsible action of Belgian defender Boli Bolingoli. The second-choice full-back made an illicit trip to a high-risk country in Spain, failing to report the trip to the club before embarking.

Bolingoli actually featured in the match again Kilmarnock after returning from Spain, thereby putting not just the rest of the Celtic squad, but everyone involved in the league at risk. With a lack of match-sharpness to deal with as well, Neil Lennon’s side will have to be at their best to get the job done this mid-week. The fixture is set to be played in a one-off manner, which means that a winner will be decided on Tuesday. Whether or not they’re able to bounce back from the last game’s result remains to be seen, as the other Premiership sides have already gained a lead over them in terms of positioning.

Team News

One thing that can be said with absolute certainty is that Belgian full-back Boli Bolingoli is set to play no part in this fixture. The services of Swiss international striker Albian Ajeti have been acquired by the Celts over recent weeks, and he’s likely to start this match on the Celtic bench. The Hoops don’t have any recognised injury problems to deal with at this point, which means that Neil Lennon is expected to field his strongest possible eleven for this European encounter.

Defence

Having arrived from Greek giants AEK Athens this summer, Vasilias Barkas has settled into his position in between the sticks for Celtic in a fairly efficient manner. Not only has he made some smart saves, but he has also looked rather confident with the ball at his feet too. In front of him, expect the usual centre-half duo of Kristoffer Ajer and Christopher Jullien to be given the nod. With Boli Bolingoli effectively frozen out of the side, Greg Taylor and Jeremie Frimpong are set to continue in the full-back roles. They will be responsible for providing depth to the Celtic attacks.

Midfield

Although players like Olivier Ntcham are likely to be pushing for a place in the side, it’s unlikely that Neil Lennon will take any unnecessary risks for this high-profile European clash. Scott Brown is hence set to start as the midfield anchor who is responsible for acting as the link between the defence and attack lines. While the skipper sits just in front of the back-line and offers defensive protection as well, Callum McGregor on the other side will try to make things happen in the final third of the pitch.

Attack

With everything that’s on the line for Celtic in this fixture, the Glasgow club are expected to give Odsonne Edouard a Champions League start. The Frenchman kicked off the season in excellent fashion but struggled quite badly in their last league outing against Killie. James Forrest and Mohamed Elyounoussi are likely to start this fixture in the wide areas for Neil Lennon’s side. Ryan Christie is the man expected to take up the number ten role, responsible for providing Edouard with direct support in the final third of the pitch.
