Edson Álvarez ‘linked’ with Benfica as Cologne open talks, but move not on agenda | OneFootball

Edson Álvarez has again been linked with Benfica for the new season, but the club are not planning a move for the West Ham midfielder.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Cologne have opened negotiations with the 28-year-old holding midfielder and believe an agreement is possible, although West Ham are still seeking a high fee.

Álvarez spent last season at Fenerbahçe on loan from West Ham, making 18 appearances for the Turkish club. He remains under contract with the London side until June 2028.

This summer he was named in Mexico’s squad for the 2026 World Cup and featured in four matches, starting twice.

With Álvarez not in Benfica’s plans, João Palhinha remains the priority to bolster midfield. Marco Silva considers the Portugal international to bring experience, intensity and balance. The deal is proving difficult, in part due to strong competition from Juventus and Aston Villa.
