Edu has officially left Nottingham Forest a little over a year after arriving as global head of football.

His contract has been terminated, according to sources close to the club. He has not attended a match since February and has stayed away from the stadium and training ground since early March.

Forest do not intend to replace him or make a formal announcement. Chief Football Officer George Syrianos has already taken on expanded duties after the 48-year-old was sidelined, and following Ross Wilson’s move to Newcastle United in October last year.

Appointed in July 2025 after five years at Arsenal, Edu’s remit spanned Evangelos Marinakis’s group, including Olympiacos and Rio Ave. His position came under scrutiny during last season’s turmoil, with a relegation battle and four permanent head coaches. Under Nuno Espirito Santo the previous campaign, Forest had been chasing a Champions League place.

Nuno left in September 2025. Ange Postecoglou followed but lasted just 39 days, then Sean Dyche took charge and departed in February. Vitor Pereira came in next and has since been succeeded by Oliver Glasner, formerly of Crystal Palace.

Before Forest, Edu became Arsenal’s first technical director in 2019, appointing Mikel Arteta that December, then was named the club’s first sporting director in November 2022 before resigning in November 2024. His recruitment at Forest, including Omari Hutchinson, Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko, has been questioned. The former Invincibles midfielder previously worked at Corinthians, advised Iran in 2014 and later coordinated Brazil’s national team.
