Eduardo "Chacho" Coudet has left his post as River head coach, confirming his departure in a pre-training press conference alongside president Stefano Di Carlo.

According to SuperDepor.com, his project ends after 27 matches and just under six months, following River’s elimination by Independiente Santa Fe in the Copa Sudamericana round of 16.

Leonardo Ponzio, technical secretary since late 2022, will take interim charge with reserve coach Marcelo Escudero.

The hierarchy had not planned for this and there is no immediate plan B. They believed River would clear this round, after bright spells in the first half and a spell in the second, yet the shootout summed up the team’s current state.

The board could now look to someone with club roots, rather than turn to Ramón Díaz and his son Emiliano. Rodolfo D’Onofrio recently said there was no place for them, and figures recall their acrimonious 2014 exit. While Díaz departed as a champion and might ease pressure, senior club figures said in recent hours he would not be contacted.
