Egypt players given heroes' welcome after World Cup exit

Egypt’s national team returned home on Friday to a heroes' reception after their World Cup round of 16 defeat to Argentina.

They had led 2-0 until the 79th minute before losing 3-2. According to L'Équipe, several hundred supporters greeted the Pharaohs at the airport.

Fans ran after the team bus as it pulled away, while others followed by car or on motorbikes.

The country celebrated a historic campaign. Egypt had never previously reached a World Cup round of 16, except in 1934 when that stage served as the first round.

They advanced from their group for the first time and won their first knockout tie at the tournament. Egypt were, along with Morocco, one of only two African nations to clear the opening knockout round.
