Egypt’s staff were involved in a heated confrontation with police in the team hotel lobby in Dallas, Texas, hours before their round-of-32 tie with Australia at 20:00 in France on Friday.

Footage on social media shows head coach Hossam Hassan and his twin assistant Ibrahim being pushed back by two officers. Almasry Alyoum reported that fans had been taking souvenir photos with players before security intervened, which angered Ibrahim Hassan.

The flashpoint followed a young supporter’s picture with forward Hassan Trezeguet. As Ibrahim moved towards the fan, an officer told him to step back.

Tensions rose as Ibrahim protested at being pushed, called the officers crazy and was heard repeatedly swearing at them. Other members of the Egypt delegation stepped in to separate the parties.

Egypt finished second in Group G behind Belgium with two draws and one win against New Zealand. Mohamed Salah’s side will now try to reach the last 16 for only the second time in their history, after 1938.
