Eight goals after half-time: Turin clash matches rare Champions League feat

Juventus and Borussia Dortmund played out one of the most remarkable matches in UEFA Champions League history, finishing 4-4 in Turin, with all goals coming after half-time.

It is only the second time in Champions League history that eight goals have been scored in one half, and just the third time across both the European Cup and Champions League.

The other two occasions were Bayern Munich’s 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb last season, and Legia Warsaw’s 8-0 second-half demolition of UTA Arad back in 1969.

A forgettable first half, a frenzied second

The first 45 minutes at the Allianz Stadium gave little clue to the drama that was to follow. Neither side particularly threatened, and it looked as if the match might drift towards a cagey, low-scoring affair.

That all changed after the break. Dortmund struck first through Karim Adeyemi, his angled drive across the goalkeeper sparking the chaos to come.

Juve responded swiftly as Kenan Yildiz curled home a stunning equaliser, only for Felix Nmecha to restore Dortmund’s lead almost immediately with another long-range strike. Substitute Dusan Vlahovic then raced clear to make it 2-2, before Yan Couto’s sharp finish put Dortmund back in front once more.

Late drama in Turin

When Lloyd Kelly was penalised for handball and Ramy Bensebaini converted the resulting penalty to make it 4-2, it looked like Dortmund had finally killed the game off. But Juventus, buoyed by their weekend 4-3 win over Inter Milan, had other ideas.

Vlahovic pulled one back with three minutes of stoppage time left, before turning provider for the final act. His cross from the right was met by Kelly - who redeemed his earlier misfortune - powering home a dramatic diving header to seal a remarkable 4-4 draw.
