To the surprise of many, Hugo Larsson was left out of the Sweden squad for the upcoming World Cup, which was announced on Tuesday.

Eintracht Frankfurt board member for sport Markus Krösche reacted to Graham Potter’s decision in a statement published on the club’s website on Wednesday morning, expressing clear disbelief.

“This decision is simply not explainable from a sporting perspective. Hugo has developed at the highest level over the past few years, delivered consistent performances, and is one of the absolute key players in our squad,” Krösche said.

“34 competitive matches this season speak a clear language. Anyone who ignores such performances sends the wrong signal to every professional who works hard week after week. For us, it's clear: Hugo more than deserved the call-up. This decision is not only incomprehensible, but in our view simply wrong.”

Larsson, 21, has earned 12 caps for Sweden. He was included in the squad for their World Cup playoff matches against Ukraine and Poland in March, but was an unused substitute in both games.
