Eintracht Frankfurt have sacked head coach Dino Toppmöller after the 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen on Friday night.

Under-21 coach Dennis Schmitt and under-19 boss Alexander Meier will take interim charge. Bild claims they will lead the Champions League tie against Qarabag in midweek, and that a new permanent head coach will be in place next weekend against Hoffenheim.

The decision followed a post-match meeting, which confirmed both parties would part ways.

Toppmöller said he would have liked to continue but accepted the decision. He spoke of daily passion, pride in the past two and a half years, and thanked players, staff, the board and employees. He wished Eintracht calmer and successful times.

He had taken Eintracht into the Champions League through league position, but defensive frailties have been stark this season. Frankfurt have the joint-worst defence in the league and have conceded nine goals in their first three games of the year.

With Champions League football on offer, the club could attract high-calibre candidates, including Marco Rose, Edin Terzic and Roger Schmidt, as well as former Bundesliga coaches Sandro Wagner, Bo Svensson and Adi Hütter.
