Egon Loy passed away on 15 May 2026 at the age of 95, a day after celebrating his birthday with his family around him.
Loy was Eintracht’s goalkeeper from 1954 – 1967, making a total of 349 appearances for the club. He was part of the 1959 German league-winning side, as well as being between the sticks for the legendary 1960 European Cup final against Real Madrid. He was also on duty for the first round of matches in the inaugural 1963 Bundesliga season. The jersey that he wore on the European stage at that final in Glasgow earned him the nickname “Black Panther" – one that would follow him for the rest of his life and that he was proud to answer to.
“Influential Eintracht player”
Loy remained true to the club beyond retirement and continued to watch Eintracht on television and via live streams. “Egon Loy was one of the most influential Eintracht players and it was wonderful for us that he continued to be part of the club at such an advanced age,” said Eintracht CEO Axel Hellmann. “Whenever he spoke about international football in the 1950s, it was genuinely a history lesson from another time, and a fantastic one at that.”
Member for over 70 years
“Alongside the outstanding achievements of winning the German championship in 1959 and reaching the European Cup final in 1960, Egon was also one of Eintracht’s most loyal members, having been part of the club for more than 70 years,” said club president Mathias Beck of the goalkeeper’s legacy. “The whole Eintracht family is mourning the loss of a dear friend and a shining example for generations of football players."
