Albin Ekdal has come a long way since joining Sampdoria from Hamburg in 2018, maturing both as a footballer and as a person. It was in Genoa that his first daughter, Alma, was born – soon to be joined by the second daughter his partner Camilla is carrying.
“I love it here and so do my family,” the Sweden midfielder admits. “I’ve started a family here so I’ll always remember Genoa for that. Every day when I come here to Bogliasco, I have a smile on my face – I’m very happy. Samp are a big club in Serie A and it’s a lovely jersey to wear every game so I’m delighted. I hope to stay here for a long time.”
The 31-year-old will be staying until at least 2022 after signing an extension to his Sampdoria contract and he’s aware of his role within the dressing room.
“I’m one of the most experienced players in the team. I’ve played lots of games in Serie A, so I feel important,” says the Doria vice-captain.
“I’m pleased with the goals I’ve scored so far, but scoring isn’t my job – I’m the type of player that works for the team. I want to win games, first and foremost.”
Albin also had a word for the fans, who are sadly still missing from the stadium.
“When I’m out for a walk, the fans stop me and say nice things. They’re so important and we can’t wait to have them back.”
