Liverpool made it five games unbeaten after Hugo Ekitiké scored twice at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.
It was an even game in truth and on another day Brighton likely would have got on the scoresheet but it was Arne Slot's side who earned all three points at Anfield helped by a goal in the first seconds of the game.
A poor clearance by Yankuba Minteh was headed down by Joe Gomez into the path of the French forward who kept his cool before giving his side the best possible start.
Unfortunately for Gomez and Liverpool the defender had to be replaced in the 26th minute. Dominik Szoboszlai had to be slotted into right-back but that meant a big ovation as Mohamed Salah, in the headlines recently, came on.
There was controversy just before half time as Diego Gomez, trying to win the ball, stuck his boot into the midriff of Florian Wirtz. There was no card from the on-field referee and VAR decided not to intervene to produce a red card – on another day the Paraguayan would likely have been sent off.
Liverpool made it 2-0 with an hour gone in the game as Salah sent a corner in from the right with Ekitiké, completely unmarked, able to head in from close range.
Both sides had chances but in the end it was a win for a Liverpool team who are showing signs of getting back on track and now move up to sixth in the lead with Brighton currently in ninth.
