Elche have activated a clause to terminate Rafa Mir’s loan and his employment contract after he was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for sexual assault and injuries. The judgment is not final and the player will appeal.

The club said in a brief 49-word statement that it had executed the termination clause covering both the loan agreement reached with Sevilla and the player’s employment contract.

Elche inserted the clause when Mir joined on loan last summer. Two days after the verdict, the club moved to end the arrangement, even though his stint was due to finish on 30 June.

The statement also condemned any act of violence and expressed absolute respect for the judicial process.

Mir’s gross salary is around three and a half million euros. He is also awaiting any measures Sevilla may decide upon following the judgment.
