Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw against Elche last night was marred with controversy, for both of the team’s goals were relatively contentious.

The second goal, in particular, was extremely dubious and has generated significant controversy because Vinicius Jr collided with Elche’s goalkeeper Inaki Pena and left him with a bloodied nose seconds before Jude Bellingham converted.

A lot has been said about the legality of that goal, with Elche’s manager openly criticising the referees for not consulting VAR at the time. Real Madrid, for their part, will not be bothered as they got away with a point.

Former Real Madrid player’s thoughts

Former Real Madrid player and current Elche star Alvaro Rodriguez was asked to prove his honest opinion on the situation after the game between the two teams last night.

Caught in a queer situation choosing between loyalties to his former and current clubs, the player gave his honest thoughts revealing that he did not see the goal to be controversial.

“Real Madrid’s 2nd goal? It didn’t seem like a foul to me,” he said via El Chiringuito.

It will remain contentious for a long time as to whether or not Vinicius’s action should have been deemed a foul at the time.

After all, there have been cases in the past where any action on the goalkeeper has led to decisions in the defending team’s favour.

“For me, it was a foul because he went in hard and didn’t let me participate, but if the referee went to VAR and said no,” the Elche goalkeeper said after the game, explaining his case.

Going by Rodriguez’s words, however, it becomes clear that there is reason to believe Elche were not wronged on the night.

After all, he is a player of Eder Sarabia’s team and honestly admitted to it not being a foul.
