Elisa De Almeida has faced a wave of online abuse since signing for Arsenal, with some supporters accusing her of transphobia and of endorsing far-right ideas.

The 28-year-old France defender, formerly of PSG and Montpellier, rejected the allegations in an Instagram story on Friday night. The player said in a post that the rumours were baseless and contrary to her values.

The message referred to an earlier share condemning violence against women, which she intended purely as support for that cause. At the time, she was unaware that some individuals linked to the association behind it might have ties to an organisation or political movement.

She has no connection to those organisations, and views now attributed to her do not reflect her convictions.

De Almeida has always backed respect, equality and inclusion. She is proud to join Arsenal and looks forward to wearing the colours and sharing special moments with supporters.
