Leeds United are pressing on with plans to lift Elland Road’s capacity from just over 38,000 to 53,000. Work on the West Stand is already under way.

The Times reports 49ers Enterprises are set to pay around £200m for the stadium expansion and associated improvements.

After receiving Leeds City Council approval, development of the West Stand has begun with ground excavation and deep foundation piling behind the existing structure. The stand remains fully operational. This phase is expected to take capacity to 48,000 by 2028.

Leeds have confirmed there will be no redevelopment of the South Stand, a decision welcomed by many supporters. Head coach Daniel Farke has stressed the club cannot afford to lose fan backing.

Initial works between June and July 2026 included demolition of the old West Stand Banqueting Suite, the former ticket office and sections of the Fullerton Car Park.

To meet the new level, the club will upgrade dressing rooms, changing areas, press facilities, high-power broadcast spaces and widen the tunnels. A new tram service linking Leeds city centre to Elland Road is also being implemented. Overall matchday capacity across the project is set to rise by about 15,000.
