Leeds United have set out plans to lift Elland Road’s capacity to 53,000, centred on major works to the West and North Stands.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, pre-application proposals were lodged earlier this year for partial demolition and extension of the West Stand and outline permission for changes to the North Stand. The West project is further advanced, and when complete it would match the East Stand in scale, with a capacity of 17,750, while the North would rise from 10,414 to 15,300.
A formal application in July set ambitions to compete sustainably in the Premier League and European competitions and to host national and international football, plus concerts and other events. Up to eight non-football events could be staged each year, and a consultation found local support was overwhelmingly in favour.
The chairman said the redevelopment offers a rare chance to refresh a century-old stadium without losing Elland Road’s famed atmosphere. He added that welcoming thousands more supporters is central to the club’s long-term commitment, and that plans will be shared with fans and the community for input.
If approval is granted, West Stand construction could begin in May 2026 and finish in the final months of 2028, with the North Stand targeted to open at the back end of 2030. A planning meeting was cancelled earlier this month, so any decision is now due in the new year.
