Manchester United have been given major encouragement in their continued pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.

United want Anderson

United are expected to prioritise strengthening their midfield department in the upcoming window, having spent the bulk of last summer’s budget on attacking signings.

In January, Casemiro confirmed that he will leave United at the end of the season once his terms expire. Combine this with the uncertainty surrounding Bruno Fernandes future and the fact that talks with Kobbie Mainoo over a new contract are yet to achieve a breakthrough, and United’s need for midfield reinforcements becomes even more urgent.

Some of the players believed to be on United’s radar include Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), Ibrahima Sangare (Nottingham Forest), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest), Sandro Tonali (Newcastle), Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle) and of course, Anderson.

Anderson has emerged as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League this season despite Forest’s battle to survive the drop.

He is largely expected to secure a big move this summer, with United and Manchester City the two clubs showing the strongest interest in snapping him up.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that City were frontrunners to secure the England international’s services. It was even stated that an agreement was in place, dealing a knockout blow to United in the race for the player.

However, the reliable Ben Jacobs has set the record straight, indicating that no agreement has been struck and it remains an open race for Anderson’s signature.

Anderson transfer update

Jacobs said [as quoted by SportsMole], “We’re not at an advanced point of club-to-club negotiations or even Elliot Anderson saying he only wants one club, so at this stage we can’t really say whether the blue or red half of Manchester are winning.”

“As with Antoine Semenyo, Manchester United tend to try and get the player buy-in first, and if they can’t, they back out and they make a point of sometimes, through sources, of course, not officially explaining why.”

“My intel from within the club at the moment is not that Manchester United definitively think they’re going to lose the race for Elliot Anderson or that he’s going to go off to Manchester City or that the player is only going to make a decision based on finances.”

Jacobs continued, “There is an appreciation Man City will be able to offer more money, but Manchester United are certainly going to be able to improve upon his current Nottingham Forest package as well.”

“So this is one I think is going to run into the late April/Early May period before we get real clarity.”

Anderson has made 29 Premier League appearances this season, contributing two goals and as many assists.
