Elversberg clinched their first-ever Bundesliga promotion with a 3-0 win over Münster on the final day of 2.Bundesliga, sealing second place. Paderborn will face Wolfsburg in a two-legged play-off on 21 and 25 May.

According to L'Équipe, the Saarland club hail from a town of 12,000 near the French border and achieved the milestone a year after losing a promotion play-off to Heidenheim.

French forward David Mokwa Ntusu scored twice, on 15 and 66 minutes, to underpin the victory.

Champions Schalke 04 also go up, their return long since secured after three years in the second tier. Elversberg will be among the smallest towns to reach the top flight, though Hoffenheim’s 3,270 residents remain fewer.

Paderborn took third with a 2-0 win over Darmstadt, pipping Hannover, who drew 3-3 with Nürnberg and now face an eighth successive season outside the elite.

At the bottom, Fortuna Düsseldorf dropped to the third division for the first time in 18 years after a 0-3 defeat to Greuther Fürth.
