Flamengo beat Vasco 1-0 in the third round of the Campeonato Carioca, with Emerson Royal a standout as the right-back impressed across the derby.
According to Coluna Do Fla, Emerson said he gave up part of his holidays to work on fitness, taking 15 days to train and believing it showed on the pitch. He added that a proper pre-season lets him deliver much more and that he plans to stick with that approach.
The senior squad had been brought back earlier than planned. The under-20s were initially set to face Vasco, but after the youngsters underperformed, Filipe Luís’s side debuted after only nine days of pre-season, secured a key win and moved away from the relegation quadrangular in the state competition.
Emerson started and completed the 90 minutes. He made five tackles, produced eight recoveries and won six ground duels, according to Sofascore.
Flamengo are back in action on Sunday 25, meeting Fluminense in the fourth round at 18:00 Brasília time. The match takes place at the Maracanã, with the tricolour as hosts.
