New Paris mayor Emmanuel Grégoire wants a fan zone in the capital on 30 May for PSG v Arsenal in the Champions League final. According to L'Équipe, he outlined the plan just after PSG clinched qualification on Wednesday.

He said work on the proposal had already started and would resume with PSG on Thursday morning. He presented it as part of a renewed link between City Hall and the club after a break during Anne Hidalgo’s second term.

Grégoire stressed he wants the occasion to be a major celebration with PSG and across the city and the Grand Paris, and further afield. He underlined that any event must be staged safely for everyone.

The interior minister Laurent Nunez criticised the announcement. He said discussions would normally be held with the police prefect beforehand, which had not happened.

Nunez added that the authorities would still need to decide where any fan zone would be located.
