Alphonso Davies and the Canadian national team have big plans for the 2026 World Cup. The co-host wants to stay in the tournament as long as possible. The fact that the Bayern star is making great strides is being viewed favorably.
After all, Davies missed the end of the season due to a muscle injury. There were even reports at one point that his World Cup participation might be in jeopardy.
However, in close consultation between the doctors at FC Bayern and those at the Canadian Soccer Association, it was decided that while they shouldn’t take any risks, they would at least try to get the left-footed player back in shape.
In recent weeks, Davies has been able to slightly increase his workload. He missed the first game, but at least made the bench for the second. Canada has four points going into the final match; a draw against Switzerland will now be enough to win the group.
And in all likelihood, the Bayern star will be on the field! “I expect him to play,” said Jesse Marsch, Canada’s national team coach, ahead of the third group stage match. However, a spot in the starting lineup isn’t planned—the plan is to ease him back in gradually.
On a positive note, Davies has “been training with the team all week,” according to the national coach. And Marsch is convinced that the Bayern player can still make a significant impact.

“Physically, in terms of his soccer skills, and mentally. Our captain is back; our best player is back on the team. I think that’s a crucial factor,” he explained.
For Davies himself, it would also be important to return to his usual form. After all, following a season to forget, he wants to prove himself again at FC Bayern. For now, however, that’s still a long way off. For him, the focus right now is on soaking up the emotional moment of his comeback.
