Ended up having a drink pre-match with this Chelsea fan – Hope he made it to the game!

After a difficult couple of days on a personal level, I relaxed in Tynemouth Club before our Carabao Cup tie.

I had been up to Newcastle in the morning and had a couple in the Five Swans before heading back down to the Coast. It was there that I was introduced to a Cockney bloke called Dave by Auld Ella’s.

It turned out Dave was an Chelsea fan and travelled to many away games.

He also had family links to our former local star Paul Dummett.

Dave told us he had previously been a groundsman at the Oval for 24 years, which immediately piqued my attention. He had prepared many a wicket and we went on to discuss England’s shortfalls in the recent test series in Pakistan.

We then got on to the game at St James’ Park. We all agreed that there would probably be one goal in it but I was absolute in saying that United would prevail.

I said in a recent article that this cup game was the most important over our four day double header against the Blues. It was essential that United progressed.

Our League form so far has been average.

Before the start of the season I emphasised that Eddie and the Hotrods had to make an impression in the domestic cups, especially with us being out of Europe.

As the afternoon wore on, Dave was beginning to show signs that the old tiddly wink was taking a hold.

I told him to knock it on the head and get some scran or he might not see the game. We shook hands and he was soon off to meet his mates in Bacchus as arranged, I hope this particular Chelsea fan then took it easy and made it to the game!

It was a good night for the Toon under the lights and we ran out deserved winners. This was also revenge for Chelsea’s spawny penalty shoot-out win against us in last season’s competition.

Also nice to see the Rolls Royce Alexander Isak getting his second goal in as many games.

Favourites Manchester City were knocked out by Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, whilst Aston Villa also bit the dust at home to Crystal Palace.

We have got a good draw at home to Brentford in the last eight. If we can dispose of the Bees we will then face a two legged semi-final.

If Newcastle United can really start getting their act together, there is nothing to stop us going all the way.
