The Japan international is currently sidelined after a serious foot injury suffered against Sunderland, but it’s not just the pain of the setback that has stayed with him, it’s how we reacted in that moment.
Speaking via Liverpoolfc.com on Kodansha’s Red Machine podcast, the No.3 opened up on the moment he was stretchered off and why it meant so much to him.
After putting his body on the line in typical fashion, the midfielder revealed that the reaction from the away end overwhelmed him.
“I was not crying because it was painful, it was because our fans were singing my song and that means a lot to me.”
That tells you everything about the mentality of the 32-year-old, because even in a moment of real physical distress, his focus remained on the team and the supporters.
Endo added: “I think it felt less painful because of that and I really appreciate it because I haven’t played a lot of games this season, but I always try to help the team even if I just play five minutes or 10 minutes.”
It’s that attitude that has made him such a respected figure within the squad, even without regular minutes.
There is, however, a more difficult reality behind this story, because this injury may have come at the worst possible time for the midfielder’s Liverpool career.
Arne Slot had already confirmed that the midfielder faces a lengthy absence, stating: “Wata will be out for a long time. We don’t know exactly how long.”
That timeline, combined with his limited role this season, raises real questions about whether we’ve seen Endo in a Liverpool shirt for the last time.
Even so, his influence goes far beyond appearances, something Virgil van Dijk made clear after the Sunderland game when he described the squad as “gutted” and highlighted just how important the Japanese international is behind the scenes.
The midfielder himself also acknowledged the continued backing he’s received since the injury, saying: “I’ve got a lot of comments on social media after the injury. I really appreciate it. They take care of me. It helped me a lot to keep me motivated.”
Whether he plays for us again or not, moments like this are exactly why Endo will always be appreciated, because he’s shown what it means to fight for the badge, and we’ve shown what it means to stand behind our players.
