England 1-1 Uruguay: Valverde penalty denies Three Lions victory

England were held to a 1-1 draw by Uruguay at Wembley Stadium in their send-off series ahead of the World Cup, following a lacklustre performance from Thomas Tuchel’s side.

A disappointing first half saw both teams struggle to create clear-cut opportunities, with the game goalless at the break. Ben White appeared to have secured the win on his return to the Three Lions with an 81st-minute strike, but a late penalty from Federico Valverde rescued a draw for the visitors.

As it happened

Tuchel named a heavily rotated England side, handing senior debuts to James Trafford and James Garner as part of an experimental XI featuring 11 changes.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa opted for a strong starting lineup, including Real Madrid’s Valverde and Barcelona’s Ronald Araújo, with Darwin Núñez named among the substitutes for the South American side.

The home side started brightly, dominating possession and attempting to break down Uruguay’s compact and disciplined defence.

Dominic Solanke, who looked lively early on, drove through the midfield and tried his luck from distance, but his effort was blocked and resulted in a corner that came to nothing.

Joaquín Piquerez was forced off on a stretcher following a collision with Noni Madueke, leading to a lengthy stoppage in play. He was replaced by José María Giménez. The disruption did little to help England, who were already struggling to find rhythm with a side that had not played together before.

Solanke had another opportunity after the home side regained possession, combining neatly with Madueke in a quick one-two before finding space on the edge of the box. However, his effort was comfortably saved by Fernando Muslera.

Uruguay, who had found it difficult to get out of their own half, created a rare chance when Agustín Canobbio surged through the middle of the pitch. The winger, however, blazed his effort over the bar after getting underneath the ball.

Madueke was forced off in the 37th minute after landing awkwardly, with Jarrod Bowen coming on in his place – an injury concern for both player and club.

As the half progressed, England continued to lack cohesion, managing just one shot on target. Marcus Rashford produced a moment of quality with a driving run from deep to create an opening, but there was no one in the box to meet his delivery.

Seven minutes of added time were indicated at the end of the half. Canobbio had another opportunity after a promising move to Uruguay, but once again failed to hit the target, firing over. Shortly after, the referee blew for half-time with the score level.

A half-time substitution saw Jordan Henderson replaced by Adam Wharton in a roll of the dice from Thomas Tuchel.

Ronald Araújo then produced a strong challenge on Phil Foden, prompting an animated reaction from Tuchel on the sidelines. Replays suggested the defender was fortunate to avoid a booking.

Two further changes followed, with Cole Palmer and Dominic Calvert-Lewin replacing Foden and Dominic Solanke as England continued to shuffle their pack.

Despite their efforts, England struggled to carve out clear opportunities, resorting to long-range shots that were either blocked or comfortably dealt with by Fernando Muslera.

Uruguay made changes just after the hour mark, with Rodrigo Aguirre and Maxi Araújo making way for Facundo Pellistri and Federico Viñas.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side then won a free-kick in a promising position, but Giorgian De Arrascaeta failed to test James Trafford, summing up a frustrating attacking display.

Tuchel introduced four more changes as he assessed his fringe players on a difficult night, with Ben White’s introduction met by audible boos from sections of the crowd.

England’s best chance came soon after, when a free-kick delivery found Calvert-Lewin unmarked inside the six-yard box, but the striker guided his effort wide in what was a golden opportunity.

Uruguay grew into the latter stages, putting together some neat passages of play, but still struggled to truly trouble Trafford.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 81st minute. Palmer delivered an excellent cross to the back post, where Calvert-Lewin headed the ball across goal, allowing White to apply the finishing touch from close range.

Bielsa made his final changes as the game approached the 90th minute, before Uruguay were awarded a penalty deep into added time after Viñas was brought down by White. Valverde stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, sending his effort past Trafford to bring the visitors level.

The referee soon brought the game to a close, marking a disappointing end for the home side, while Uruguay will be encouraged by a resilient performance to earn a draw.

The Three Lions now turn their attention to their final pre-World Cup fixture against Japan, with several key players set to rejoin the squad as Thomas Tuchel finalises his preparations for the tournament in the USA.

England analysis: Fringe players fail to impress Tuchel in bid for World Cup spot

Tonight was a chance for England’s fringe players to shine, but they struggled. Tuchel rested 11 key players after a long season, who will return on Monday, leaving the rest of the squad to impress.

The first half was frustrating, with the Three Lions lacking attacking cohesion and appearing to play for themselves rather than the team. That continued into the second half, even after a flurry of substitutions, leaving Tuchel with little to reward.

White’s goal gave him a chance to stake a claim, but for most, it was a tough night against a solid Uruguay side. One final match remains to impress Tuchel and earn a place on the plane to the USA.
