England produced one of the finest displays in European Championship history and fans are all saying the same thing.
Up against pre-tournament dark-horses Norway, the Lionesses ran riot at the Amex Stadium, scoring eight unanswered goals in front of a delighted home crowd.
Sarina Wiegman’s side were ruthless in attack –– something the Dutch manager has long demanded –– and there were no signs of the nerves that had been obvious against Austria last week.
Beth Mead continued her exceptional scoring run by netting a hat-trick, while there were also goals for Lauren Hemp, Georgia Stanway, Alessia Russo and a double for Ellen White.
Understandably, fans were in utter disbelief at the performance. Many had predicted England to go far in this tournament, but the majority considered Norway a stern test, especially with the world-class pair of Ada Hegerberg and Caroline Graham-Hansen up front.
Former England striker Ian Wright shared his brilliant reaction to the Lionesses’ masterclass and praised the in-form Mead on her stunning display.
But Wright was not the only elated Lionesses fan on the night.
GiveMeSport Women attended WeLoveSport’s live watch-along of the game at the Gosta Green pub in Birmingham, and spoke to fans at full-time about the memorable result.
Many stressed that this was the best England performance they’d ever witnessed.
“Yeah, we’ve never seen a scoreline like this,” one said. “We said from the beginning it would be a Spain vs England final, but we never expected a score like this against a team as strong as Norway.”
Another echoed these thoughts, stating: “I never had any doubts, but I was hoping the nerves wouldn’t carry through. This was just unbelievable though.
“We were just so dominant. Beth Mead, Ellen White and Lauren Hemp were just incredible. It’s definitely one of the best performances ever.”
Others emphasised that the Lionesses are now firm contenders to win their first-ever major silverware.
“I think we can go all the way after watching that,” one fan admitted. “Spain, Germany and France have all looked really good but England were unplayable tonight.
“I think the home crowd support is making a lot of difference. As soon as England scored the first, you sensed they were going to build on it and the crowd helped so much.”
England face Northern Ireland in their final group game at St. Mary’s Stadium on Friday.
Northern Ireland have lost both of their matches so far and the Lionesses will be huge favourites heading into the game.
With qualification for the quarter-finals now secured, Wiegman may choose to rest a number of players and give other members of the squad a chance to prove themselves ahead of the knockout stages.
For now, though, England will enjoy this victory and soak in every moment.
It was a historic win, on a historic night, on what could yet prove to be a historic tournament.
