England manager Thomas Tuchel has clarified that Mason Greenwood is not under consideration for a recall to the national squad. The Marseille forward, who made his only England appearance in 2020 against Iceland, has since been linked with a switch to represent Jamaica through family heritage.
That potential change of allegiance remains unresolved. Jamaica manager Steve McClaren revealed that while the player has acquired a Jamaican passport, he has not completed the necessary paperwork that would make the switch permanent. Without a signed declaration, Greenwood remains tied to England, at least officially.
McClaren expressed his disappointment after failing to call up Greenwood for World Cup qualifiers. “We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp, but in a conversation with his family, he’s not going to commit at this time to anybody,” McClaren said. He added that the door remains open and described Greenwood as a player who “loves Jamaica” but currently prefers to focus on club football.

The forward has taken his time to weigh up his options, despite recording an impressive Ligue 1 campaign with 21 goals and six assists last season. McClaren also explained that while Jamaica will continue their interest, they cannot wait indefinitely. “As soon as that decision was made and he couldn’t commit, you move on. You don’t harp on it and don’t go, ‘What if this?’ or ‘what if that?’ you move on and control what you can control.”
Tuchel has been clear about his stance. “I have not spoken to him until now,” he said. “I have not spoken to him or his camp. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica, so we didn’t give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team. I don’t rule anything out, but he is no priority at the moment.”
That leaves Greenwood in limbo at international level, with neither England nor Jamaica securing his commitment. For Tuchel, the focus lies on building a balanced and forward-looking squad, while Greenwood must decide which path best suits his ambitions.
At 21 years of age, Greenwood still has time to decide on his international future. For England, the situation remains straightforward, as Tuchel has drawn a clear line on where Greenwood stands. For Jamaica, the chase continues, with hopes that the forward will eventually formalise his connection.
Until then, the story remains unresolved. Greenwood continues to shine at club level, but on the international stage his future remains firmly in his own hands.
