England end ‘Homecoming Series’ with win against Ghana | OneFootball

England enjoyed a positive end to the ‘Homecoming Series’ as they recorded a 2-0 win over Ghana at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton this evening.

The reigning European champions ended the calendar year on a winning note thanks to Lucia Kendall’s early first half goal and Alessia Russo’s penalty at the death. 

In the first-ever meeting between the two nations, it was Sarina Wiegman’s side that took a fifth-minute lead. Former Southampton academy graduate, Kendall, opened the scoring in her first game back at St Mary’s Stadium since leaving the club in the summer. Kendall slotted the ball past Cynthia Konlan after the Ghanaian keeper failed to clear Chloe Kelly’s low pass. It was the Aston Villa midfielder’s first senior international goal. 

England came close to doubling their lead in the 32nd minute through Missy Bo Kearns, however, her shot did not trouble Konlan, as the ball went wide. 

After making a strong start to the first half, the Lionesses continued their relentless attacking right up until the break but they couldn’t convert several good opportunities.

Lucy Bronze came close to netting England’s second goal from a Taylor Hinds delivery but her headed effort hit the bar before Aggie Beever-Jones suffered the same fate just before the 60-minute mark. 

Second half substitute, Princess Marfo, then looked to make an immediate impact for Ghana. She got a strong shot away, but her effort was saved by England keeper Anna Moorhouse. 

At the other end, Konlan saved Russo’s low effort to prevent the substitute from doubling the Lionesses’ lead.

England were awarded a penalty in added time when a hand-ball was committed in the six-yard box. Russo slotted the ball past Konlan as the game ended 2-0 in England’s favour.

England will now turn their attention towards FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 qualifying which begins next spring.
