Lucy Bronze and Georgia Stanway scored as England secured a 2-0 win over Iceland to maintain a perfect start to their 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
Bronze marked her 145th appearance for the Lionesses by opening the scoring midway through the first half at the City Ground. The experienced defender rose to head home from a cross after England had dominated the early stages.
Sarina Wiegman’s side controlled much of the match and created numerous chances but struggled to extend their lead before the break despite sustained pressure.
Iceland rarely threatened but came close to equalising just after the hour when Sandra Jessen’s header forced a strong save from goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.
England continued to push forward and finally secured the result late on. Bronze turned provider with a cross that Stanway volleyed home to double the advantage and score her 32nd international goal.
The victory follows England’s win over Ukraine earlier in the week and keeps their qualifying campaign off to a strong start.
